Course Info

2021 brings more changes yet again…

I’m extremely humbled by the acceptance of our runners over the last two years. I mean, the lake closed, forcing us to a new location in 2019. Then…COVID and a snow storm in 2020.

And 2021 is bringing us more changes.

Lake Cunningham is tentatively opening July 15, 2021. I have been in talks with the Lake Cunningham Development Trust (who now runs Lake Cunningham), and we have been promised a date.

What that means for us is seeing if the original trails on the lake side are salvageable. With that being said, 2021 might be back on the original side. But the original side will have changes–this is guaranteed. There are now 6.2 miles of beautiful cement trails around the lake–and some of that concrete lies on our original dirt course.

GOATz Trail Runs (GTR) will happen this year. It might be on the original side. It might be on the new north side. Either way, it promises to be amazing.

It’s our 10th anniversary, after all!

I personally guarantee an amazing race, regardless of which course we use. (Heck, I might even use both!).

With that being said, sign up for a surprise. The trails and you are what the GOATz are all about anyway, so we’ll have a party to celebrate a somewhat return to normalcy.

<3 Kim, Race Director.

North Cunningham Lake is a tree-lined park with rolling hills and scenic views just north of Glen Cunningham Lake. The trail is mostly single track, equestrian trails, and mowed grass that wind in and out of wooded areas. The course will be well marked with directional arrows, orange tape, and ground markings.

The GOATz Trail Runs 50M, 50K, 21M, and 10.5M are all run on the same 10.5-mile loop. We had to make some adjustments from last year since a nature preserve was added, but the map below is pretty spot on. 🙂

Aid Stations

**Changes for 2020 race due to COVID! Items you have usually seen in the past which will not be available are designated with a strikethrough.

There will be 2 fully stocked, buffet-style aid stations at the Start/Finish and Runner Church (halfway point at 5.75 miles). There are 2 unmanned water stops at approximately mile 3.1 and mile 9.2 of each loop. Unmanned water stations are cupless. No bottle, no drinky. You must have a hydration device.

  • Beverages: water, Tailwind Electrolyte Drink, Coke, Gingerale, Sprite
  • Endurance foods: Honey Stinger Gels, Endurolytes
  • Fruit: oranges, bananas
  • Salty Snacks: potato chips, pretzels, pickle spears
  • Sweet Snacks: gummy bears, chocolate, Oreos, fig bars, candy corn
  • Real Food: sandwiches or tortilla wraps with your choice of peanut butter, jelly, turkey meat, cheese; chicken broth, Ramen noodles, potatoes with salt
Drop Bags

A designated drop bag area will be under a tent in the start/finish area. Please mark your bags clearly with your name and bib number.

Average temperatures this time of year range from a low of 41 degrees to a high of 58 degrees. Temps have reached near 70 degrees twice during our race series. It’s imperative you remain hydrated before, during, and after the race.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    • Is this a good “first” 50M or 50K race?

Yes! With a 14-hour cut-off for the 50M race and a generous 9-hour cutoff for the 50K, plenty of seasoned ultra runners working as volunteers, and the allowance of a pacer for the final lap makes this a great “first” 50M or 50K race!

    • Are the trails closed to the public during the race?

No. You may be sharing the trails with the equestrian community. If you come upon horses, it is your responsibility to announce your presence and ALWAYS give them the right of way.

    • Are there any bathrooms on the course?

Yes! We will have porta-potties available at the Start/Finish line, and there will also be porta-potties available at the halfway point aid station at mile 5.

    • How do I volunteer?

Shoot an email over to Race Director Kim Bultsma at kim@goatz.org and tell her all about your desire to volunteer. She’ll get you hooked up in the right spot!

    • Are there locations for spectators?

Yes! There will be several drop in points to see your runner. Please note: You MUST be careful driving on these areas as runners may be crossing the road. Watch for our volunteer police and traffic monitors for instructions on where to drive and when!

You can see your runner cross twice on Pawnee Road near the Archery Range between 84th and 96th Streets. You MUST park in the ditch on either side and not block marked runner crossing zones.

You can also see your runner on Dutch Hall Road between 84th and 96th Streets. You MUST park in the ditch on the north side only.

If you prefer to hang out at the Start/Finish, bring a chair, your own tent, get comfortable, and cheer on your runner and others. Of course, runners always have the right of way and may be crossing some of the roads. Please drive slowly and responsibly.
